NCAA PCM – Draft Board / Report 2008

By Guichard Cadet

Unlike previous drafts, the activity will mainly center on the picks themselves and NOT the current players traded. Though I do foresee 3 key trades, selecting the Lottery (top 14 picks) proved much harder than previous years.

Thankfully, the PCM helped clear some of the confusion, which led to a DRAFT BOARD based on “NEED” as opposed to strictly a projection of where a team plans to be in X number of years. This is the reality of today’s NBA where player movement is technically “RESTRICTED” until realistically their 8th year in the league, unless they have no value to their team.

So, teams should look to not get saddled with “unmovable” contracts and use the draft to build a core of 3 KEY young players.

FIRST ROUND

Pick Number

TEAM

CHOICE

1

Chicago Bulls

Derrick Rose

Would not be surprised if Beasley is the pick. Drafting Rose creates a messy situation, leading to forced trades - Hinrich / Nocioni.

2

Miami Heat

Michael Beasley

3

Minnesota Timberwolves

Brook Lopez

If McHale is a gambler, trade down for DeAndre Jordan.

4

Seattle Supersonics

O.J. Mayo

5

Memphis Grizzlies

Kevin Love

6

New York Knicks

Trade Pick

Such a logjam at every position. Cannot think of a player to draft. Best to to clear contracts, the mid-sized one first: Richardson, Jeffries and James.

7

Los Angeles Clippers

D.J. Augustin

8

Milwaukee Bucks

Trade Pick

Need an infusion of talent at every position, except SG: Redd, the guy making the most and is ironically the trade bait.

9

Charlotte Bobcats

Roy Hibbert

10

New Jersey Nets

D.J. White

11

Indiana Pacers

Jamar Butler

There's talk of a trade for a PG and change of culture. Too much talent to throw-in the towel; wait until mid-season to decide.

12

Sacramento Kings

Kentrell Gransberry

13

Portland Trail Blazers

Russell Westbrook

14

Golden State Warriors

Jerryd Bayless

15

Phoenix Suns (from Atlanta)

Chris Douglas-Roberts

16

Philadelphia 76ers

Marreese Speights

17

Toronto Raptors

DeAndre Jordan -- OFF THE BOARD PICK

Package the right players to get Minny's pick to give Bosh more help, or take this gamble.

18

Washington Wizards

Joe Alexander

19

Cleveland Cavaliers

Eric Gordon -- OFF THE BOARD PICK

Give up the expiring contracts and take back SALARY for the Knicks or Bucks pick, unless Gordon is still available.

20

Denver Nuggets

Darrell Arthur

21

New Jersey Nets (from Dallas)

Anthony Randolph

22

Orlando Magic

Jamont Gordon

23

Utah Jazz

Robin Lopez

24

Seattle SuperSonics (from Phoenix)

JaVale McGee -- OFF THE BOARD PICK

Keep drafting Centers until one pans out, or get expiring contracts for teams looking to get younger.

25

Houston Rockets

Brandon Rush

26

San Antonio Spurs

Richard Roby

27

New Orleans

Joey Dorsey

28

Memphis Grizzlies (from L.A. Lakers)

Trade Pick

No need to bring in another young player, get an expiring contract to shed more salary.

29

Detroit Pistons

Bill Walker

30

Boston Celtics

DeVon Hardin

*3 First Round Trades would most affect the "Off the Board Picks": DeAndre Jordan, Eric Gordon; or selection of International Players.
